You can explore past landscapes and visualise change through time with Historic Digimap, which provides access to scanned maps of Great Britain dating back to 1840 with the ability to view maps from different times side-by-side making visual comparisons easy. The historic map collection includes over 400,000 geo-referenced digital map images available for viewing or use in GIS.

Digimap allows users to view, annotate and print maps online from A4 to A0; or download the data for use in GIS.

Products available include:

• All available County Series maps published between 1843 and 1945, at scales of 1:2,500 and 1:10,560

• All available National Grid maps published between 1945 and the introduction of Ordnance Survey’s digital Land-Line data, at scales of 1:1,250, 1:2,500 and 1:10,560/1:10,000

The map data is available in .tiff format with either:

  • TFW world files for ESRI GIS users or
  • TAB files for MapInfo users.

Map images can also be saved as GIF files.

Users must register to use Ordnance Survey Map Data with EDINA, before which they should read the full EDINA Digimap Terms of Use. Edinburgh University users may contact the Data Library for access.
