GeoConvert is a free online service available to members of UK academic institutions from the Census Dissemination Unit (CDU) at MIMAS which provides postcode-related information, geography matching and geographical data conversion facilities. GeoConvert's functions are based on analysis of information contained in versions of the National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD). GeoConvert's functions allow users to:

  • obtain information relating to postcodes (e.g. deprivation scores, grid reference co-ordinates, urban/rural indicators, area classifications)
  • obtain population-based proportional redistributions between the zones of different geographies
  • convert population-related data from the zones of one geography to those of another.
Spatial Coverage:
United Kingdom

The National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) and its precursors contain a wealth of useful information about the changing relationships between a wide range of the different geographies used within the UK (postcodes, wards, primary care trusts, etc). However, in their raw state, the size of these datasets, and the complexity of the methods required to identify relationships between geographies can present a considerable deterrent to their use.

GeoConvert develops and extends the work of the Convert (Updated UK Area Master Files) Project and enhances it with a new interface, up-to-date versions of the National Statistics Postcode Directory (NSPD) and the ability to search historical data.
