MOSAIC, normally used for profiling neighbourhoods as a marketing tool, is a classification system that divides United Kingdom into postcode-based neighbourhood types. Each postcode is assigned to one of 11 groups such as Twilight Subsistance, Rural Isolation. Each group is further sub-divided into 61 types such as Green Belt Guardians, Metro Multiculture, or Affluent Blue Collar. The geo-demographic types are based on Census data, electoral roles, commercial credit information and other marketing data.
Experian data covering the years 2004-5 and 2008-1022 are available from the UK Data Service for academic use. The dataset includes the Median Household Income, and is supplied for intermediate geographies in raw ASCII format for the entire UK (Super Output Areas (SOAs) for England and Northern Ireland, and Datazones for Scotland. The dataset has three main components:
The dataset is made up of a database of all 1.6 million postcodes in Great Britain, along with their corresponding neighbourhood group and type. The data is accompanied by a Multimedia Guide which provides text descriptions of each type, along with a photo collage, sound and video, and an illustration of the relationships of types to one another. It also charts several variables that characterise each neighbourhood type according to an index (For example, single parent households are more or less likely to occur there according to a benchmark of 100%).

'Mosaic United Kingdom - The Consumer Classification for the UK' and 'Understanding Mosaic UK Groups and Types' are available as PDF files (in the Background directory).
A PDF file for each socio-demographic Group and Type exists in the NeigPDF directory.

A PDF version of the Mosaic UK-E-Handbook is available at: OrthosDatalibDocumentation.
The United Kingdom MOSAIC data should be used for geographic comparisons within England, Northern Ireland and Wales, or between areas in Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Where places only within Scotland are analysed, the Scotland MOSAIC data provides a more accurate set of groups and types.
