Historical directories of England and Wales

Alternative Title:
Digital Library of Historical Directories

Historical Directories is a digital library of local and trade directories for England and Wales, from 1766 to 1919. It contains reproductions of comparatively rare books, essential tools for research into local and family history. The collection provides national coverage and also integrates material from different institutions into a coherent, and free, online collection. The website contains at least one directory for every English and Welsh county for each of the 1850s,1890s and 1910s. The directories include lists of names, addresses and occupations of the inhabitants of the counties and towns they describe, and successive editions reflect the changes in the localities over a period of time. Content can be located by location (via mapping utility), keyword, or by decade.

See also Historical Directories of Leicestershire, a collection of 50 trade and street directories for Leicester and Leicestershire dating from 1790s to 1910s. Directories are an invaluable primary source for historians. They provide first hand data about local communities, their infrastructure and the individuals inhabiting those communities.
